Week eleven brings such a vast array,
Of emotional thoughts while we forge through each day.
As we near the end of this challenging school year,
We mourn traditions and celebrations that we all hold so dear.
We cannot ignore things that simply won’t be,
Graduation for our seniors held traditionally.
No prom king, nor a prom and absolutely no queen,
This virus wrought havoc changing our entire routines.
Our sports teams were halted and stopped on a dime,
No spring sports or trainings or gatherings of any kind.
The clubs all were ended and our theatre shut down,
The Fine Arts Festival canceled in our beloved hometown.
The life giving substance of social life with close friends,
Was abruptly interrupted and quickly came to an end.
The things you looked forward to were all placed on hold,
With no choice other than waiting to watch this school year unfold.
Virtual celebrations to honor the gifts unique and extreme,
Of our 2020 senior class full of hopes and future dreams.
You served your time well growing stronger each year,
Would this life changing event bring bitterness and fear?
Our seniors were left (I’m sure) feeling the brunt,
The sting and the punch of this life altering stunt.
They had no other choice but to wait it out and see,
This disruption quite staggering for this part of our family.
Some may have thought that this burden would be too much to bear,
And that folks would just give up in fear and despair,
But that’s not the inner most part of our being,
For in Goochland we look for new ways that are freeing.
To our seniors we love you, YES, this poem’s dedicated to YOU!
We are proud of your gifts and your talents, it’s true,
Your lives – they have touched us beyond measure through the years,
And not getting to end this year together – has brought so many tears.
We would never pretend that we know how you feel,
The things that you’ve missed are absolutely a big deal.
This has been a huge mountain that you’ve had to climb,
As there was simply no way we could turn back the time.
Each one of you matter, so the administrators therefore,
Created a Graduation Day, for you, like none other before.
Your day will be unique, filled with thoughts of great care,
But what matters the most is that YOU will be there.
You will not be forgotten, we are still here for you,
You are strong and courageous and we knew you’d get through.
It’s okay if you’re sad and feeling just a bit stressed,
There was simply no way to prepare for this unforeseeable test.
Hold fast to your faith and please keep this in mind,
The difference you’ve made has all been captured in time.
Your memories live on, they will not fade away,
Your individual journeys and connections will live on day by day.
There is simply no limit to the potential you hold,
What a pleasure it will be to watch as your lives unfold.
Your interests will lead you and your futures will be bright,
Farmers, plumbers, teachers, chemists, county officials, first responders, doctors, lawyers, nurses, politician’s and perhaps a playwright.
To the class of 2020, we’ve a message for you,
Keep a positive spirit and show kindness in all you do.
Remember to pause and look for ways to help others each day,
Because staying strong and helping out is truly The Goochland Way!
One day, many years from now, perhaps you’ll look back,
And think about this world pandemic as just a minor setback.
It’s been an inspiration knowing you have fared it well,
For you will be the ones with the greatest stories to tell!
Class of 2020 – WE LOVE YOU! GO BULLDOGS GO!!!
Stay strong – stay safe – stay optimistic!
