STEM is the acronym commonly used to describe endeavors aimed at (S)cience, (T)echnology, (E)ngineering, and (M)athematics. We have embraced STEM education as being foundational in nature: these disciplines serve to guide both content and strategies in all teaching & learning in grades PK-12.
Evidence of our focus on STEM education is ubiquitous throughout our system. Our students are engaged in project-based learning experiences at all academic levels, from our kindergarten classrooms to our high school science labs. We have provided our teachers with professional development focused on inquiry-based lesson design each of the last three years, training that has resulted in even more dynamic learning environments for students. Our flagship enrichment programs (Summer STEM Camp & Winter Conundrum Day) have become highly anticipated annual community events attended by hundreds of students and community volunteers. Our STEM Advisory Committee has been recognized by the Virginia Department of Education for its work integrating STEM into our PK-12 program, as well as its ability to spark community engagement.
We are proud of the impactful role STEM education plays in our school division and recognize its value in preparing students for success in life after high school.
