Throughout February, GES celebrated Black History Month and honored the contributions of African Americans through engaging activities and lessons. In addition to classroom instruction, students participated in the following:
EPIC Book Collections: Curated, grade-appropriate Black History Month collections were shared with classrooms, featuring both fiction and nonfiction books. Students explored biographies, narrative nonfiction, and stories celebrating Black authors, illustrators, awards, and characters.
GES News: Each day, GES News spotlighted an African American figure and their contributions.
Music Encore: Students were introduced to a variety of African American performing artists who have enriched our musical world. They listened to music by Scott Joplin, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Chuck Berry, Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and several current artists. Genres such as Ragtime, Jazz, Rhythm and Blues, Motown, and Reggae were explored.
SEL Encore: Students focused on the themes of Kindness and Acceptance.
Library: Black History books were displayed and highlighted, and students learned about the Coretta Scott King Book Award.
Art Encore: African American artists and their works were showcased.
We are proud of the meaningful learning experiences our students had throughout Black History Month at GES!
